A Social Experiment: What do you see when you look at your reflection?

When was the last time you looked at yourself in the mirror with intent?

Almost every home has one or two or three. Mirrors are often associated with vanity and narcissism but in everyday life, many people tend to avoid looking at themselves for more than a quick glance.

Are you one of those people?

How often do you really look at yourself in the mirror to see yourself, not to check if your hair is out of place or if your lunch may have ended up on your crisp white shirt?

On Tuesday afternoon, Stacey put out a challenge to the team which included JSbu and Buhle, who reports on Traffic on the show.

The challenge involved each individual spending a significant amount of time looking at their reflection in a full-length mirror.

At first, the experiment seemed an easy task for both JSbu and Buhle, but the two quickly learnt that the experiment would actually be more revealing than they thought it would be. This is no surprise, as most people are conscious of activating their own critical thoughts about their appearance.

As humans, we are conditioned to compare our physical image with ideals and standards. That’s how we typically use mirrors but, whether we realise it or not, mirrors and reflective surfaces also play an important role in our psychological and emotional well-being.

A quick glance in the mirror may do more for you than you realise. If you're not feeling quite yourself today, consider taking the time for a thoughtful look in the mirror.

In an intimate and vulnerable social experiment, Stacey, JSbu and Buhle reflect on what they see when they look at themselves in the mirror:
