You may have come across this symbol on your high school desk, on a groovy street corner or even in branding. There is much more than what meets the eye when it comes to this 'S'.

This 'S' is incredibly cool, but also quite mysterious... no one truly knows where it comes from and, no, it's not Superman.

There are allegedly five theories behind how this powerful symbol came to be.

So here's the thing, despite all the theories shared, no one truly knows where the 'S' thing came from. There are plenty of guesses, but none of them have been conclusively proven. 

One user says: "This is why it's called the cool S, no one knows where it comes from and that's what makes it even cooler. It's timeless."

According to Vice, the five theories are:

  • Theory One: The S Was Invented by a Band Called Sacred Reich
  • Theory Two: It's the Suzuki Emblem
  • Theory Three: It's a Californian Gang
  • Theory Four: It Was Invented By Nikki From Delaware
  • Theory Five: It's a Form of "Decorated Initial" From Medieval Europe
