Uganda's wildlife authority divides social media
Is there anything wrong here or is everyone just overreacting?
An image has been doing the rounds on social media from Uganda. The image depicts what seems like two tourists, who are on a wildlife safari tour, and a group of tour guides, who seem to be carrying the tourists.
Many on social media have said that it is 'unfair' and those are 'unsafe working conditions' for the workers pictured.
A few of the comments drew comparisons to rickshaws, which are very popular on the Durban beachfront.
Rickshaw drivers, often used by tourists, are well known for their magnificent and colourful beads and other decorations.
We got in touch with the Communications Manager at Uganda Wildlife Authority, Bashir Hangi, for comment about the image.
"Those are community members, they have an association of porters, UWA allows them to operate in the park of a way of enabling them to benefit from the park as neighboring (sic) communities. They offer porter services at a fee. Those who go tracking and get tired are also carried at a fee, same applies to disabled trackers," he said.
When pressed about the queries of the safety of the workers, Bashir Hangi added: "We have guides and armed rangers who move with both trackers and porters."
