#ThrowbackThursday: Do you remember your Mxit name?
Updated | By Thandolwethu
In the early 2000's, the very first mobile messenger, Mxit, was launched and gave a generation of Millennials the opportunity to engage with one another in an innovative and cost-effective way.
According to Quartz Africa, Mxit was founded in 2005 in South Africa and was a popular instant messaging service for millions of South Africans before Facebook, Whatsapp, and other social networks in the country.
In 2012, CNN reported that Mxit had 10 million users in South Africa, overtaking Facebook and Twitter at the time, with six-million and 1,1-million users respectively.
The social network was a huge hit with the younger generation who, for the first time, had the opportunity to 'chat' with their friends from around the world for all hours of the day.
Remember how you would pretend to be in your room sleeping as a teenager, but instead you would be under your covers chatting away? Aah, the memories!
One of my favourite features on the platform was the ability to change your status, which also allowed you to share with your contacts your mood. A popular one being the 'in love' emoticon update.
What a real throwback!
