Zimbabwean domestic worker speaks to Phat Joe on passport confiscation

Speaking to Phat Joe on condition of anonymity, a former domestic worker from Zimbabwe explains why passports are often confiscated by employers.

During the drive show on Monday, the team chatted about a story that has everyone on social media outraged.

A family from Plumstead posted an advert on Gumtree seeking a domestic worker who needed to be clean, hardworking, pleasant smelling and would be paid R2000 per month. However many pointed out that the minimum wage was R12 an hour so if they required her for a month she would have at least been paid R3402 per month.

The question was posed to listeners whether they found anything wrong with the advert and for domestic workers to share their horror stories that they have experienced. 

A Zimbabwean woman called in and chatted about a story as a domestic worker which piqued Phat Joe’s interest. She shared her story about how her passport was confiscated by employers and the conditions she was subjected to while being a live-in domestic. Listen to her story below:
