eThekwini Deputy Mayor officially welcomes Phat Joe to the city
Updated | By East Coast Drive
East Coast Radio’s Phat Joe has become a true citizen of Durban
after receiving an official welcome from eThekwini Deputy Mayor, Fawzia Peer, today.
Peer presented Phat Joe with a welcome
certificate to the City.
Last week, Phat Joe told listeners that two months after taking over as East Coast Drive host, he is yet to feel as if he truly belongs in KwaZulu-Natal. He was looking for something more to seal his KZN identity, apart from eating a bunny chow or hitting the beach.
Much to his surprise, on Friday (14 October 2016), eThekwini Mayor, Zandile Gumede, called Phat Joe live on-air, warmly welcomed him to the city and promised to make it official.
The “ceremony” took place at midday today at the Durban City Hall. Presenting Phat Joe with the welcome certificate, Peer welcomed Phat Joe to the city and also wished East Coast Radio all the best as the station celebrates its 20th birthday.
The certificate acknowledges the contribution East Coast Radio has made over the past 20 years in “addressing social challenges in our community and keeping citizens inspired through the various programmes and projects of the radio station.”
A delighted Phat Joe thanked the Deputy Mayor for the honour. “I;m looking forward to being a proud member of this community!” He also promised to “work closely with the municipality to make Durban the best place on the planet!”
