As the school bell rings and the eager little feet enter and exit the corridors, that's when you know school is in session.

An update on the school calendar has been shared by the Department of Basic Education. This new policy document updates the last version published in 2015.

Why did the calendar change?

As stated by BusinessTech,  "The department had to implement substantial alterations to school calendars in 2020, 2021, and 2022 due to the national state of disaster caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the different levels of lockdown in effect. Under the updated policy, a new provision states that: “In exceptional circumstances, upon demonstrating good cause, the Minister may permit deviation from the Policy.”

This slight modification relates to the timing of school closures in the fourth term.

What are some of the changes?

While there have not been many major amendments, some minor changes in wording relates to when schools will close in the fourth term. In addition to this, the way that critical information is shared will evolve. The department will now notify stakeholders of changes to calendars via social media channels and government websites. Prior to this, only the government gazettes and newspapers were used.

HERE is the updated policy for calendar changes.
