Shakes failed South Africa

Mashaba failed South Africa

Speculation is rife that Bafana Bafana coach, Ephraim "Shakes" Mashaba is about to be shown the exit door.

He took over the position two years ago and there has been no improvement.

His squad selection criteria has always been questionable. Remember, I questioned his very first squad two years ago.

Over the past two years he has overlooked talented players like Kermit Erasmus, Keagan Dolly and Reyard Pieterse in favour of average players like Thamsanqa Gabuza, Bongani Ndulula and Ntsikelelo Nyauza.

At some point, he substituted Erasmus in the first half in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Nigeria. The game was a dead rubber since Bafana Bafana had already qualified. Erasmus even tweeted that he is tired of playing a second fiddle.

He has had issues with overseas-based players like May Mahlangu and Thulani Serero.

In last year's Afcon Bafana Bafana scored first in all their three matches in the group stage but went on to relinquish their leads. How can we pin our trust as a nation on someone who fails to at least grind out results, three matches in a row.

He is complaining about lack of strikers but he is the one who selects bench warmers in their respective clubs.

Shakes has failed to qualify for the Afcon by finishing third in the group that had Mauritania, Gambia and Cameroon. Is that coach capable of helping us qualify for the world cup? I don't think so.
