On their Facebook page, the eThekwini Municipality shared that recreational activities at Umngeni and Umhlangane rivers are not recommended.

This is a result of the high levels of E.coli bacteria found in the water.

E.coli has strains of the bacteria that can cause severe stomach cramps, bloody diarrhea and vomiting. One can be exposed to E.coli from contaminated water or food.

The municipality has the public's best interests at heart with this decision.

The high levels of this bacteria is due to sewage overflow from some of eThekwini  sewage pump stations that are constantly vandalised.

On their post, they continued,

The municipality will inform the public once it’s safe to use water.

Refraining from recreational activities means no fishing, surfing, swimming, and collecting marine creatures.

The Blue Lagoon Beach has therefore been closed until further notice.
