Over 70 crates of sardines netted at Toti beach
Updated | By Darren, Keri and Sky
Each year in June or July, large shoals of sardines move in a line along the coast, and this year was no different as large quantities were caught.

The annual sardine run has arrived, resulting in large numbers of sardines being netted on Durban beaches.
In June, it was reported that close to 500 crates were netted at Illovo and Pennington beach, while more than 250 crates were hauled at the Umgababa beach in the same month.

On Tuesday, 21 July, the sardine run continued as 70 to 80 crates were netted at the Illovo and Amanzimtoti beach - this according to licenced netter Brahmanand Tony Outar, who together with the Gradwell brothers, was present to haul in the small quantity of fish.
Also known as pilchards, sardines always move around in huge shoals in the surface layers of the ocean; making the netting process an easy one.
