Offside? Is Bertrand interfering with play?

Offside? Is Ryan Bertrand interfering with play?

Manolo Gabbiadini had a goal disallowed in the League Cup final. Was it the correct decision?

Gabbiadini thought he had opened the scoring for Southampton in the EFL Cup final against Manchester United when he tapped in from close range, but the assistant referee raised his flag and the goal was ruled out.

He was onside because he was not ahead of Chris Smalling, United's last defender.

The person who was in an offside position when the ball was played was Ryan Bertrand. So, there are two things that come to my mind - either the official thought Bertrand stroked the ball past the goalkeeper or he thought Bertrand was interfering with play.

The only way he is interfering with play is if he is affecting the keeper's decision because the keeper doesn't know whether to anticipate a shot from Gabbiadini or to try to cut the cross before it reaches Bertrand.

I think the goal should have stood because Gabbiadini got to the ball first and the goalkeeper expected him to be the one to take the shot.
