Married to an infected partner

A Durban mother’s world fell apart when she was told that her husband of more than 20 years, is HIV positive. She told East Coast Breakfast that she only found out about his status 10 years after he contracted the virus.

Durban mum, Avrille Peters is one incredibly strong woman.

The wife and working mother of three faced one of the toughest challenges of her life when she was told by a doctor a few years ago, that her husband was HIV positive.

The man she met when she was 15 and married at 21, had an extra-marital affair and was diagnosed with HIV in 2001. Avrille says she only found out about his condition 10 years later, when she took him to the doctor after he’d complained of chest pains. She was told he needed treatment for TB and then discovered he was HIV positive.

Avrille has shared her emotional journey with the East Coast Breakfast team and how she learn't to forgive and love her husband again. Her story will inspire you.

As the breakfast team, we encourage all couple to go testing with their partners this World AIDS day - let's break the stigma's around the epidemic together.
