This British man pleaded with his local municipality to let him search for it in a landfill site.

The 35-year-old IT engineer, James Howells, shared that he threw away this hard drive back in 2013. How did he make the mistake of throwing out a hard drive with something so important?

He had identical hard drives and that he mistakenly took out the one containing the cryptographic “private key” needed to access and spend his Bitcoin.

The latest report was made by CBS News in December 2021, as he made a plea sharing that he does not ever want to give up on searching for his 'lottery ticket', as he calls it.

Howells is still confident he’d be able to recover the bitcoin after all these years.

His main concern is with the insides of the hard drive, which he is confident will be in tact, even if he found it with external damaged.

Sadly, the only way to regain access to it would be through the hard drive he threw in the trash eight years ago.

But he needs permission from his local council to search a garbage dump he believes contains the lost hardware. The challenge is that the landfill is not open to the public and trespassing would be considered a criminal offence.

Can you imagine how determined and committed he is to this? His life is at somewhat of a standstill because of this simple mistake.

The young man offered to share 25% of his money to a COVID-19 relief fund for his home city if he found the hard drive. He also promised other community contributions.

But City Council in Newport, where he resides, has so far rejected his requests to look through the landfill, citing environmental and funding concerns.

This seems to be a decision set in stone.
