#LifeHacksByKeri: This is eggs-actly the breakfast hack you've been looking for

Ever experienced cracking an egg over your prepped cake batter, only to mess it because the egg is actually rotten? Then this life hack is for you! Determine how fresh your eggs are before completely messing up your culinary experience.

Egg hack for easter

You know that feeling when you crack an egg into a pan or bowl only to see a weird colour and smell something disgusting? Well, this is a lifehack that will help you know eggs-actly how edible your eggs are without having to crack them open.

What you will need:

  • A glass/bowl
  • Water
  • Eggs

What to do:

  • You just need to fill a bowl/glass with cold water and place your eggs in the bowl.
  • If the egg quickly sinks to the bottom and lies flat on its side, that’s a sign that it’s very fresh.
  • If it sinks but stands on one end at the bottom of the bowl, it’s a few weeks old but still good to eat.
  • And if it floats in the middle or to the surface, it’s NOT GOOD to eat.

Why does this method work?

It’s very simple. Eggshells are porous so they allow some air to get through. The longer the egg has been around, the more air has been allowed in. So fresh eggs have less air in them and sink to the bottom of your bowl/glass. Older eggs have lots more air in so are more buoyant and float.

And if you’re still not sure… crack the egg and have a good look. If the egg is fresh, the yolk is a beautiful bright yellow or orange (especially if it is a real free range egg) and the white shouldn't spread much. Also, fresh eggs shouldn't have much of a smell at all.
