Protect Ponta started six-years-ago in Mozambique when Durban local, Shannon Mathie, was in in Southern Mozambique on holiday. She saw the state of the animals there and started caring for a dog who had been caught in a snare and bit its foot off in order to free itself.

She vowed to return to do something about what she saw, so 6 years later Protect Ponta was established.

After hearing about this awesome initiative following the devastating cyclone that destroyed many parts of Mozambique, we invited Shannon to the studio to hear more about Protect Ponta.

Shannon teamed up with her local Vet in Hillcrest who put her on Spay Sisters, a charity set up by UK vets to improve the lives of cats and dogs in 3rd world countries, in locations where overpopulation is a problem and veterinary care is inadequate.

Shannon shared pictures of her team of volunteers, including 10 vets from the UK,  making this project to protect wounded and sick animals possible.
