The Breakfast Team pays tribute to Mandoza

Following the passing of South Africa's biggest Kwaito Star, the Breakfast Team shares their fondest memories of Mandoza

Mandoza

South Africa mourns the loss of legendary Kwaito Star - Mduduzi Tshabalala, better known as Mandoza who lost his battle with cancer on the weekend.

In honor of the music icon, the Breakfast Team shared their earliest memories of the super star:

Keri:

"In 2000 Mandoza made it big with Nkalakatha. I remember it so clearly as I had just finished Matric in 1999 and was in the States doing Rotary Exchange.

It was before I had wireless and there were no online music stores so I had to get my parents to send me the cd. And I played it for all my friends. They were so excited to hear music from "aaaafriicaaa'.

I think if Mandoza had wanted to do a concert in St. Louis, Missouri, he would have had a full house :)

Thank you for showing us white kids kwaito.
RIP Mandoza"

Sky:

"My earliest memory of Mandoza is, of course, the hit Nkalakatha

It will go down as the official rugby song on every stadium in SA. I remember Kings Park stadium going crazy when Odwa Ndungane scored a last-gasp try in 2007 to lead the Sharks to a 1 point win over the Crusaders.

The whole stadium was buzzing with Nkalakatha in the background and was just so cool that such an epic rugby moment resonated with Nkalakatha. We will forever remember the legend that was Mandoza every time we celebrate a victory

Rip Mandoza"

Darren:

"Was at a club in Illovo with work mates (Danny Wonderboom) when I heard it for the first time. Wooowwww. I had never seen so many people of all races dancing to a kwaito song!  I had no idea what the song meant but by the end of the night Nkalakatha was on everyone's lips.

Mandoza was truly an icon! R.I.P"

Social media tributes are still pouring in for the fallen star:
