Blue Lagoon closure frustrates anglers – ANSA Report

Fishing and recreational activities at Durban's Blue Lagoon are still banned due to high levels of E.coli and pollution.

In the latest episode of the 'Angler News South Africa' podcast, we hear from the Blue Lagoon Angling Crew about its negative impact on the local fishing community and businesses.

The eThekwini Municipality banned all recreational and fishing activities from the Umngeni Estuary to the Blue Lagoon non-bathing beach on January 7 following a Coastal Compliance Notice issued by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment.

Today’s episode also covers the latest weather alerts impacting the fishing community. The SA Weather Service has issued Yellow Level 4 and Orange Level 6 warnings for KZN from Thursday afternoon into Friday.

Forecasters predict severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours, hail, damaging winds and severe lightning across most of KZN, except for the south-east and extreme north-east regions.

Meanwhile, the south-eastern parts of KZN face disruptive rain, with risks of flooded roads, damaged infrastructure and mudslides.

With rough weather expected to continue, anglers are encouraged to use this time to prepare. Vinesh Soogreem suggests organising tackle, making traces, and getting ready for the Human Rights Day long weekend when fishing conditions are likely to improve.

Tough conditions won't last forever – and soon, the fish will be biting again.
