Durban's iconic Blue Lagoon remains closed, nearly five months after a ban on all recreational activities, including fishing, was initiated in early January. This closure, due to high E. coli levels and infrastructural damage, continues to profoundly affect the local angling community.

In a special report from the Angler News SA podcast, Vinesh Soogreem speaks with members of the Blue Lagoon angling community. They share their deep frustrations and highlight the financial and social impacts of being unable to access their traditional fishing grounds. Their primary concern is the perceived lack of clear communication and transparency from the municipality regarding the status and projected reopening date of this vital spot.

The eThekwini Municipality implemented the ban on recreational activities, including fishing, from the Umngeni Estuary to the Blue Lagoon non-bathing beach.

Anglers say while the need to address the pollution is understood, the prolonged closure without a clear timeline is the main concern.

Angler News SA has made multiple attempts to gain clarity and an official statement from the eThekwini Municipality regarding the potential reopening of Blue Lagoon. To date, these efforts have been unsuccessful.

The community remains hopeful for a resolution that will allow them to return.
