Durban's Mayor, Mxolisi Kaunda, responds to viral video

Mr Mayor sheds light on the recent controversy

EThekwini municipality Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda has been caught on tape adamantly stating that he will no longer engage in negotiations with striking SAMWU employees. 

In the leaked recording that had made the rounds on social media, Kaunda confronted the employees for shutting off essential services like water and power despite being considered a progressive union.

We sat down with Mr Mayor as he shed light on this matter:

As shared along with this circulating video, "Kaunda told the union leaders that switching off water and electricity "is treason." He told the union to call a press conference and inform the public that they have called off the strike. "I am not requesting you, I am telling you there is no meeting... I am calling off this meeting," Kaunda said, angering some of the SAMWU leaders in attendance."
