Spain looking for volunteers to drink wine daily for 4 years

Could one glass of wine a day keep the doctor away? Researchers are looking for volunteers who will drink wine every day for four years.

Drinking wine is a pleasurable downtime for many people. While some enjoy the occasional glass of wine, others make it a daily dinner ritual.

But could you imagine if wine o'clock was something you had to do every day? Would that then take the fun out of it?

The University of Navarra in Pamplona, Spain, has been making headlines with a research study. They have launched a "large-scale study aimed at determining the effects of regular moderate alcohol consumption on health."

Researchers want to find out how moderate alcohol consumption affects health, and whether it’s as risky as total sobriety when it comes to heart disease, cancer, and dementia, Wio News reports.

While 4000 eager participants have already raised their glasses, researchers are hoping to find 10,000 volunteers by June 2025.

With just a few days left, we can imagine that they are trying to attract as many volunteers as possible.

Wio News reports: "The European Research Council will allocate €2.4 million (about R48 million) to provide wine to 10,000 volunteers over four years—one glass per day."

The study will be beneficial to those who volunteer. They will receive healthcare support from qualified healthcare professionals for four years. The participants will be assigned special nutritionists and dieticians based on their diets, lifestyles, emotional well-being and other areas of their health.

One of the researchers, Patricia Romero-Marco, said: "This study will clarify many great myths and doubts. Things that are still treated as jokes but are not, because as a nutritionist, I have had to decide many times in my consultation what alcohol recommendation to give to the patient."

This groundbreaking study will be very insightful for medical professionals. Monitoring alcohol consumption in a healthy and controlled setting can assist doctors in making more informed diagnoses.

Would you ever be open to such a study?
