Travel blogger reviews Durban bunny chow

A travel blogger shares his review of the epic Durban bunny chow and how it got its name.

An American travel blogger recently visited Durban to review our famous bunny chow, and he shared his insight on social media.
TikToker ThereGoReece says he's always been passionate about food and the history of particular dishes. On his travels, he makes a point of chatting to locals about the origins of their favourite delicacies.
This time, he asked the question: “Where did the bunny chow get its name?”
While several theories surround the origin of bunny chows and the name, the many tales of how it came to be add to its narrative as a must-try dish in Durban.
But the story has recently been stirred up by an unexpected twist, with rumours that Korea is considering suing us over the name.
In his mukbang-style video, Reece dives into the various origin stories and has gotten Durbanites talking.

@theregoreece So I always had this interest in food and food history. Through my travels I’m amazed at all these different flavors and how these flavors came to be . I started to realize you can learn so much about a place and the people and their history through their food and all you have to do is ask a simple question . For this one it is the Bunny Chow . While I am never short of words the result was a video that was a little long and I know the attention spans is real low these days so I decided to answer 3 questions in 3 videos . The first question is how did the Bunny Chow get its name . I went to Durban to find out ! . . . #travel #foodhistory #bunnychow #goudens #durban #southafrica #blacktravel #hiddengems #foodforthought #travelblogger #foodhistory #traveltips #goudens ♬ original sound - ThereGoReece

There's something about having a foreigner share information about something with an inconsistent storyline that always manages to get locals revved up.
In this case, many were quick to question Reece’s claim that South Africa has the largest Indian population outside of India. It’s a widely held belief, both locally and abroad, but it’s not entirely accurate.
More specifically, people say that Durban is the city with the largest Indian population outside of India.
As the Pulitzer Centre noted in 2024:
"In fact, for many decades, the city with the largest Indian population was outside India: Durban, South Africa. Indians have been in South Africa since the mid-1800s, numbering about 1.5 million people. According to 2012 census data, 41% are Hindu, 25% are Muslim, and 24% are Christian."
