Where travel is meant to be something we aspire to, it isn't always smooth sailing when you are far away from home and end up stranded... or scammed.

An American man who uses the social media handle Passport Papi shared an interesting encounter with a South African woman after he landing in Peru.

In the video, the man says he came across the woman who said is was from South Africa. She claims that she had been stranded in Peru for two days after her taxi driver allegedly robbed her on the way to the airport.

The woman was allegedly sleeping near a McDonald's and needed money to get to the South African embassy in Ecuador.

The content creator says he was suspicious, but after asking her a few questions and verifying the information she gave him, it all turned out to be true.

He then gave her the money to cover her travelling costs to Ecuador and pay for some basic needs.

Sadly, for the good Samaritan, it was all a scam.

He wrote: "Petra has been lying to travellers for 15+ years with similar stories in Peru and Ecuador. There is a Facebook page called ‘Let’s stop Petranella Lee!’ detailing her history."

He went on to say that, regardless of whether she was scamming him, he felt bad for her and didn't seem to regret helping her.

It seems that South Africans are painting a bad name for us in other countries...
