Man released from prison as he couldn't diet behind bars

If anything, this is the one place that people should be able to lose weight...

If we had to associate our understanding of prison time, we would say that those in prison have all the time and the resources to lose weight.

From our exposure to popular culture and one too many prison series, we associate jail as the most ideal place to cut off some kilos.

But that was not the case for an Italian man who was serving out his 30-year sentence for murdering his girlfriend.

He literally got a 'get out of jail free card' when it was deemed by judges that prison food did not support him in his diet.

"In 2017, Dimitri Fricano was arrested for killing his girlfriend, Erika, during a heated argument, while they were vacationing in Sardinia. Apparently, she had scolded him for leaving too many crumbs on the bed when eating, and he became so angry that he couldn’t control himself." He was only convicted in 2022 due to the delays the pandemic presented.

What's worse is that his release from prison is connected to his dangerously obese status and his inability to lose weight.

"At the time of his conviction, Dimitri Fricano weighed 120 kgs (260 lbs), but over the next 12 months, he ballooned to 200 kgs (440 lbs), a weight that doctors say puts him at high risk of cardiovascular disease." (Oddity Central)

A court ruled that his condition was "incompatible with the prison regime" because of the food that is served in prison. As a result, he will not be able to lose the weight. Sounds like a whole lot of excuses!

"Dmitri Fricano will now serve the rest of his time under house arrest in a town near Biella, a verdict that has infuriated his victim’s family.  Although the law states that, should Fricano’s condition improve, he will return to prison, Erika’s parents believe that it is unlikely to happen." This sounds like something out of a movie and doesn't make sense at all. Perhaps the prison should think about changing its menu instead of releasing murderers from their sentences...
