What would you do as a parent if your child broke a stranger's expensive sunglasses?

A Johannesburg man visiting Durban shared an interesting story during his time here recently.

The local tourist was eating at a restaurant on the Durban beachfront when he noticed a family at the table closest to him. The family had a nanny, and they didn't look like locals, but he didn't pay much attention to them.

While preoccupied with his phone, the child approached his table, took his Prada sunglasses and damaged them, eventually breaking them. He kept his composure but immediately looked at the family's table and locked eyes with the father.

Recalling the story as he waited for his bill at the restaurant, what happened next surprised him. The father stood up from the table and asked him how much the damages to his Prada sunglasses, cost. He said he found the father's actions respectful.

The man named Max Shepard on TikTok says the child's father reimbursed him with R6,000.

Although he was upset about  his damaged sunglasses, he didn't mind getting R6,000 so he could replace his shades. The Prada sunglasses that he showed off in the video retail for R6,190.00 at the Sunglass Hut

Many people questioned the 'facts' around the story, saying that Prada sunglasses couldn't have broken so easily, but he assured them that the kid didn't have any mercy for his shades.

"Real Prada doesn't break that easily. I would question the gifter, because real Prada is STRONG."

Another person said, "Ay, that kid and his family were definitely visiting Durban." Shepard responded, "Yeh, they were foreign. But the kids are out of pocket, hey."

We asked Carol Ofori what she thought about this, and she said that remuneration for damages is only fair, whether it was her kid damaging another person's property or someone damaging her property.
