Carol Ofori shares her fondest memories of Nelson Mandela
Updated | By East Coast Radio
"Mandela was coming to visit Mafikeng... this white-haired man in the car waving and we waved frantically..." - Carol Ofori.
On Mandela Day, we asked Carol Ofori to share her fondest memories of Tata Madiba. Of course, when it comes to our iconic father of the nation, we are abundantly blessed with a range of stories to share.
However, for Carol Ofori, it was so symbolic because the stories she shared came from her childhood and her coming of age as a journalist early in her career.
The first memory was so beautiful to listen to; hearing the excitement in her voice as she relayed seeing "the white-haired man" and how he waved at her was endearing.
Carol recalls being a young girl living in Mafikeng and hearing that Nelson Mandela was coming to her hometown. At the time, she was living with her grandmother and was excited to see Tata Madiba.
Her second memory happened years later when she was a journalist at a Johannesburg radio station.
"Mandela Day is an annual global celebration on 18 July to honour Nelson Mandela's life and legacy. This day is a call to action for individuals, communities, and organisations to reflect on Mandela's values and principles and positively impact their communities." (Mandela Day)
On the 18th of July, we are all urged to do something to uplift the community or make a difference in some small way, whether that means volunteering your time at a home, feeding someone less fortunate, or picking up litter from your neighbourhood, every bit counts.
