KZN is united against gun violence

The people of KwaZulu-Natal are united in the fight against gun violence following the #StandUpForSadia campaign. Thousands across the province wore orange and added their voice to the cause.

The campaign was launched by East Coast Radio in support for victims of gun violence following the tragic death of 9-year-old Sadia Sukhraj in a botched hijacking this week.

Businesses, schools and communities across KZN have all remembered victims of gun violence in various ways today. East Coast Radio’s Programming Manager Zane Derbyshire says, “The response from the people of KZN has been incredible! Families, friends and colleagues across the province have heeded our call and are standing up and saying that we have had enough of gun violence. This campaign has been supported by other media outlets, businesses and schools and as East Coast Radio, we are thrilled to have played a part in amplifying how people in KZN feel.”

So where to from here? Derbyshire says the station will be running a campaign from next week encouraging communities to continue to take a stand, “The reality is that there are good people who are aware of friends or family members that commit crime but say nothing and this needs to stop. We call on everyone in our province to expose criminals and report unlicensed firearms to the police.”

When asked what the police are doing about gun related violence, Minister of Police Bheki Cele had this to say to Darren Maule on East Coast Breakfast today, “It is a problem in South Africa, we are infested with unlicensed firearms and we are planning another firearm amnesty. The public are encouraged to return their guns to the police once parliament has agreed to our plan.”
