World Cup: Food For Thought

We’ve been taking in all the eye candy at the 2014 World Cup so far. Maybe it’s time we turn our attention to something a little more edible.

What would the World Cup be without a bowl of biltong, chips and popcorn? Soccer fans around the globe are tuning in to watch the soccer spectacular daily, many of them aren’t sitting with just the remote control in their hands. 
 
FIFA has teamed up with Coca-Cola, McDonald’s and Budweiser among other food and beverage maker, for the 2014 tournament. A number of international news reports have shown that footie fans are filling their snack platters with an assortment of junk food. 
 
The Italians are no doubt munching on savouries like Parmesan and prosciutto, a dry-cured ham. The national team apparently packed these goods along with olive oil in their World Cup luggage. The Americans reportedly carried oatmeal, Cheerios, peanut butter and A1 Steak Sauce with them. 
 
The Mexicans are making sure they have all the ingredients to give their meals a little ‘kick.’ They apparently can’t do without chile peppers, chipotle chiles and nopales, also known as the Prickly Pear cactus. 
 
Wayne Rooney and his English boys are being given the opportunity to eat ketchup again. Coach Roy Hodgson has allowed the players to consumer the condiment after former coach Fabio Capello banned the sauce. 
 
So what are South Africans chewing on during the World Cup? We asked the East Coast Breakfast team to share what’s on their plate at home and this is what they had to say. 
 
Darren has three favourite snacks. He starts off with a Lunchbar, before moving on to biltong, popcorn and coffee. 
Good Guy Gabe chomps on chips, Doritos to be precise and popcorn. He enjoys fizzy drinks but if his team’s losing, he tells us he always looks for something stronger. 
Nats can’t resist a slab of chocolate. Yes, she can put an entire slab away by herself in one sitting. 
Big Mak Daddy says he’ll eating anything in sight. He doesn’t care what’s in the fridge. If it’s edible, it’s in Mak’s tummy.
