This week, Oxfam South Africa released a study showing that one in four people living in South Africa do not have enough to eat, and half the population is at risk of hunger. That is despite the country producing more than enough food.

Twenty-five percent of households only spend R8 700 a year on food. That works out to around R23 per day.

The General Household Survey found that 14-million South Africans do not know where they will get their next meal from.

And around 14-million South Africans do not know where their next meal will come from because they cannot afford enough food to feed their families.

The survey found that one family of four from the Eastern Cape lives off just R6 per day.

Members of the Mail & Guardian newsroom are going to try and live off R6 a day and they are challenging everyone to join the initiative, using the hashtag #6Rand.

Darren challenged Kevlar Kev the East Coast Breakfast stuntman to mark World Food Day by doing what millions of South Africans do, survive on R6 food a day, little did he know how special the people are that they'd meet along the way
