Mbongeni Ngema has wowed audiences across the country with his one-man show The Zulu.

Now it’s Durban’s turn.

Ngema’s historic show comes to Durban next week following the triumphs of its world premiere run at the 2013 National Arts Festival in Grahamstown - where it drew standing ovations – and its ground-breaking seasons in Zululand, Swaziland, Johannesburg and Pretoria. The Zulu continues its South African tour at the Durban Playhouse from 3 to 29 December 2013.

Following its Durban performances, The Zulu is set to tour abroad, with seasons in Zimbabwe and Nigeria on the cards.

Further dates, to be confirmed, will see the production touring to the United States for a season at New York University’s Aaron Davis Hall in May 2014.

Ngema told Makhosi that the play was inspired by the tales that his grandmother used to tell him as a young boy.

The theatre master also gave Makhosi some details about the upcoming Siyagiya 2013 concert which is also his brainchild.

The event promises to be the prime attraction on Durban’s live music calendar this festive season.

It takes place on the 16th of December at Westridge Park Stadium.

The concert features a star-studded line-up of local and international musicians.

Hugh Masekela, Zakes Bantwini, Salif Keita, Lira, Naima Kay, Bheki Khoza, Afrosoul, Madala Kunene and Heels Over Head are among the acts expected to perform at Siyagiya – a tribute to jazz greats such as Sipho Gumede, Alan Kwela and Sandile Shange.
