The Miss eThekwini saga

The Miss eThekwini saga

Zaba weighs in on the Miss eThekwini Municipality saga. Why is it restricted to women between the sizes of 28 - 34, and why is it costing the city R1-million?

So...today was my first day on 9am-midday on East Coast Radio. For some arb reason, it felt as though I had won Miss South Africa today with all the messages of congratulations and support (Thank you to everyone for the amazing kind words).

Speaking of pageants...the search for Miss eThekwini is set to start in September. Now when I first read the article that was published about Miss eThekwini there were a few facts that bothered me. The first one being that you have to be between the dress size of 28-34 to enter. Now this really bothered me because, hey let's be honest, every woman is beautiful, regardless of size.

The second one was the fact that there was an amount (allegedly) of over R1-million to be spent on the organisation and production of the pageant. One bar is a lot of money, right? Like a very large amount. The third issue I had was that drinkers and smokers would be barred from entering.

A lot of people don't like pageanting, and will argue that girls develop eating disorders and low self esteem because of them *cue Beyonce's Pretty Hurts* but I was a pageant kid, and they taught me self confidence, inner courage and how to shine.

We thus decided to invite Mr Thembinkosi Ngcobo, who is the head of eThekwini Parks, Recreation and Culture, to clarify and discuss this with me.

He confirmed that this pageant is only for girls between the sizes of 28-34, but that there will be another pageant for bigger girls in September. He also addressed all the other issues. Take a listen to the full interview with him below:

Just remember ladies, beauty comes in all sorts of packages!

xoxo
