‘I remember waking up early to vote in 2004, in my very first elections. I was excited, I was eager and I couldn't wait to get involved in the electoral process for the first time.

I was also very nervous. I kept thinking, "What if I make a mistake?" or, "What if my pen runs out of ink?" or, "What if I fold my ballot papers incorrectly?"

As a first time voter, these were some of the questions that ran through my mind as I walked to the voting station at the primary school near my home.

I wasn't keen on asking anyone. After all, I didn't want anyone to know I wasn’t clued-up on how voting worked.

Also, back then the Internet was a fairly new concept to me. Facebook and Gmail were the only sites I logged into. Voting turned out to be a quick and easy process and so I had been stressing for absolutely no reason.

I’m sure there are many first time voters who wish they could have a practice round, ahead of today, just so that they can familiarize themselves with the process.

So, as a gift to first time voters, here're some tips on what you need to know about Election Day

Once you’ve exited the voting venue, take your cellphone out and pose for a selfie with your inked thumb. Then tweet this photo to @ECRBreakfast along with #ThumbsUpKZN.
