Sugaring with Natarah!

Sugaring with Natarah!

The Breakfast Stack’s Natarah Nadesan hasn’t shaved in 16 years. She says she prefers the hair removal technique that slows down the growth process. After years of painful waxing though, she’s decided to go the sugaring route.

Hair removal for many women and men can be a pain in the butt.

The Breakfast Stack’s Natarah Nadesan knows this all too well.

After being introduced to shaving in her teen years, Natarah realised that this wasn’t for her.

She was keen on getting her hair removed but didn’t want to have to adopt the time consuming practice of shaving her legs and underarms almost every morning before school.

So, her mum told her about waxing. Her first impression? Eina! The results? Wonderful! No hair removal worries for weeks. Every wax experience though was met with nerves, clammy palms and leg twitching movements. This went on for 16 years, until Natarah heard about ‘sugaring,’ also through her mum.

If you haven’t yet heard about sugaring, you’re probably thinking, “What? How does rubbing handfuls of sugar onto your skin rip out the hair?” It doesn’t quite work that way.

Here’s how it’s done. Sugaring is a method of hair removal also known as Arab waxing. The beauty therapist uses a special paste made up of water, sugar and lemon juice. This gel-like substance is spread onto the skin and pulled away quickly with adept hands. Natarah’s had this done three times already and says compared to waxing, it’s far less painful and frightening.

Her beauty therapist, Sharon Vosloo of La Belle: Skin, Nail and Body Treatments in Kloof, says the sugaring treatment has wonderful benefits for the skin. The paste pulls the hair strands and is kind to the client’s skin, which sets it apart from waxing. The natural ingredients in the paste also work to remove dead skin cells and provide an effective exfoliation treatment as well. You’re not likely to get bruised or burned because the paste is always kept at room temperature.
