Forty-six-year-old Hoffman was found on the bathroom floor of his Manhattan apartment by the police yesterday. It's been reported that his death was caused by an apparent drug overdose.

A police spokesman said investigators found Hoffman with a syringe in his arm and recovered two small plastic bags in the apartment containing a substance thought to be heroin.

Aside from Capote, Philip Seymour Hoffman will be remembered for his outstanding performances in movies like Boogie Nights, The Big Lebowski, Magnolia, Along came Polly, Almost Famous, Flawless, The Talented Mr Ripley and most recently The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - among many, many others.

Philip Seymour Hoffman was one of Darren’s favorite actors, and he couldn’t believe the news of his passing.

This is what he had to say:

“Unconventional looking actor, constant good work and immense talent is the best way I can describe Philip Seymour Hoffman.

I will never forget the first film I saw Hoffman act in, Scent of a woman

Hoffman played a spoilt private school student at the bard schoo l- his acting was compelling and believable.

Although Hoffman played a small role in the film his performance made a lasting impression - I can clearly remember thinking, wow this is an amazing actor and one to watch.

Another film that stood out for me and the best radio movie ever made, apart from Private Parts, was The boat that rocked

I thought to myself; this is just the beginning and so much more is to come from this actor.

But sadly it seems to be a very painful marriage between artists - like Ray Charles, Janis Choplin, Heath Ledger - and heroin.

He was taken way too soon and will be missed on the big screen."
