One way ticket to Mars
Updated | By tanstan fourie

Marais is one of 705 people who have been shortlisted for the Mars One venture, which will see the first humans sent to live on Mars.
Mars One is a Dutch-based company, which describes itself as a not-for-profit foundation that will establish permanent human life on Mars.
Marais has been selected out of an initial field of 200 000 Mars pioneer hopefuls.
Of those shortlisted, there are only 41 from Africa.
The catch is, it's a one-way ticket: once the spaceships leave, there will be no way to come back.
“I feel like I’m somehow meant to do this,” the University of KwaZulu-Natal doctoral student and lecturer said in an earlier interview.
“A one-way trip is a huge sacrifice, but it’s a sacrifice I’m prepared to make for this idea, this adventure that would not be my own, but that of all humankind.”
Mars One's aim is to select six to 10 teams of four individuals by 2015 for seven years of full-time training.
Then, in 2023, one of these teams will become the first humans ever to land on Mars and live there for the rest of their lives.
Adriana chatted to Darren Maule this morning about her dream, the training that it will require - and why she wants to go to Mars. Take a listen to the full interview below:
So let's get behind Adriana and help her accomplish her dream!
