…Not my finest moment
Updated | By tanstan fourie
I was with my mum doing some shopping at a mall about a year and a half ago.
We were about to walk past a beauty shop when the salesperson, an attractive woman, motioned us to come over.
She began talking about their specials and told us about their marvellous make-up sets which she casually mentioned cost around R20 000. I knew at that moment that this was not the place for me.
In an effort to keep me there a little longer, she pointed out how lovely and youthful I looked to which I replied, “I wish!” I said I’d reached my 30s and was now battling with adult acne.
She heard none of that and continued to say how fabulous I looked for my age. Now to me, this saleswoman sounded as if she’d travelled the world. She spoke about the incredible benefits of her products and how they’d changed the lives of her clients.
She was sociable, young and vivacious but seemed to have years of experience in the beauty and fashion industry.
Anyway, we’d been going back and forth about whose skin looked better for about a minute when I thought, “Let me throw her the biggest compliment of her life.” So I said, “You look so beautiful. In fact, you don’t look a day over 28 or 29!”
There was a moment of silence. Then with an expressionless gaze she responded softly, “I turned 19 two days ago.” #NotMyFinestMoment
