Darren shares things he misses.

‘I use to phone my mom from a tikkie box but often I found myself without money so what I did was take window frame putty and made an impression of the twenty cent piece and then I would fill them up with water and freeze them.

I would then take them out the freezer and put it into the tikkie box quick so it doesn’t melt… And that’s how I made phone calls to my mom.’

Natarah couldn’t believe this and asked Darren to explain exactly how he managed to do this.

‘So step-by-step what I did was I made an impression of a twenty cent coin with a drinking straw on the one side, you fill it up with water through the drinking straw and then when you crack it open the ice cube is an exact replica of the coin.

You have to do it quick either it will start melting - and that’s exactly how I made phone calls.

If you forgot how a old twenty cent looked like here is a picture to refresh your memory:
Then we found an easier way by taking a little string of sewing thread, you super clue it to the edge or the face of the coin and you put it into the tikkie box while holding it so the coin goes in.

As soon as the call has gone through and it indicates that you are running out of money you pull it back and then you get another rands credit!

Worked every time!' - Darren Maule
