It’s election year and with this in mind, overall it’s a cool budget with slight cloud cover, a conservative one for Finance Minister, Pravin Gordhan.

Superb beach weather mainly for South Africans in a lower income bracket – you’ll cash in on some income tax relief.

Some unrelenting winter woes on the way for motorists though - expect a fuel levy increase.

Taking a look at government’s spending forecast over the next 3-years…

We see some reprieve on the tertiary education front, following severe thundershowers in recent weeks.

Government’s pumping R78bn into varsity subsidies & just over R19bn into the National Student Financial Aid Scheme.

Hopefully gloomy conditions over school infrastructure dissipate soon with a cash boost of R34bn heading that way.

The discomfort index is set to drop slightly healthwise. A financial injection of R42bn’s been set aside for the HIV and AIDS conditional grant.

Across the country, a wind alert’s come into effect spelling good news for municipal infrastructure. Strong gusts will continue unabated bringing with them cash support to the tune of nearly R144bn.

Blue skies and braai days ahead for social grant recipients. The old age grant & disability grant will rise from R1 265 to R1350, over 75’s will receive R1370. The foster care grant goes up to R830 & child support grant to R315.

Warm & sultry conditions for smallholder & subsistence farmers, with support increasing by more than R7 billion for conditional grants.

Bright, sunny skies forecast for KwaZulu-Natal. Our province will receive the largest budget in terms of equitable share – bagging R78-billion for 2014/15.

Stormy days ahead will hail predicted in some parts for those paying SIN taxes.

The Finance Minister says we’re going to have to fork out more for alcohol, cigarettes & fuel. A pack of 20-cigarettes will now cost you 68-cents
more.

Whisky drinkers will pay R4.80 more for a bottle while the price of a 340ml can of beer goes up nine cents.

Wasn't Natarah's Budget weather report way more fun?
