Gabriel trains for the Amashova

It's been 11 months since Gabriel has seen the inside of the gym! He is amped to get fit for the Amashova cycling event and shares his first week back at the gym.

It’s a little over a week left before the annual Amashova event. This year, I decided that I’m not going to be left out, I also want to take part. Great, but am I ready?

Well, the last time I rode a bike on the street was in 1998, which was my mode of transport to and fro school. I stopped when I heard that, “it was radically uncool” to ride a bike to school.

More specifically…a bicycle. Girls! Girls! Girls! Now, I have 35kilometres to cycle on the 12th of this month and I have done very little training for. From what I hear, from fit, in-shape, non-smoking, everyday cyclist is that…of which I’m none of, is that “it’s easy and anybody can do it”.

In all honesty, these cyclists have been very helpful in giving me advice, on what to do, what to eat etc. Shot okes! However, none of them advised me or even warned me, on how to train my butt.

I’m no Kim Kardashian or Nicki Minaj, but my behind needs consultation in this. There’s a dating stage, a moving in stage and marriage stage that your butt must engage in with the saddle…before you consider yourself an honest Lance Armstrong.

This I discovered earlier this week, when I joined the gym after an eleven month sabbatical. Okay, not really a sabbatical…just a year of calorie preservation.

In the first session back at the gym, everything was fine. I rode a stationary bike relatively comfortable, even though I sweated like I was the source of the Umgeni River. That was fine! I could handle that.

What was not fine was to walk out the gym like I just had a medical procedure done on my behind. Not cool you mototised vehicle haters!

And…whose idea is it to change the tried and tested chair size bicycle saddle design, to a provita-biscuit size seat?

That guy must go live in Chernobyl!
