Darren’s old school ads are still powerfully relevant
Updated | By tanstan fourie

We rather naively back then assumed that this loss of energy - at the whim of the parastatals - would be a temporary fad.
VW in their wisdom - secured my services to shoot four quick tongues in cheek VW Polo adverts capitalising on what we thought would be a passing inconvenience.
So in the course of one weekend plus the use of a producer’s garage and a motley crew of videographers, sound engineers and stylists we ambush shot these four quick 30 second adverts which – at the time - we thought would be fabulously ironic, great social commentary and dare I say – quite witty.
All we had to work with on the day of the shoot was this question – how would you shoot an advert for a car if there was no power. One would have to improvise with different light sources and these three 30 second adverts are a result of that process.
The irony it seems is that the powerlessness indictment has outlived the initial campaign and that these ads could serve us today – just as easily on YouTube – obviously with the cars updated as well as the prices – adjusted for inflation.
