Damon learns to drift!
Updated | By Jason

This past weekend, thousands of people flocked into the Durban Motor Show at the Durban Exhibition Centre to see what real auto pedigree looked, felt and even sounded like.
There were motor cars, bikes and even trucks to look at and visitors also got to watch 30 of South Africa’s top drifters compete to have their name written in the history books by taking part in the final championship race of the national SupaDrift Series.
If you don’t know what drifting is, it’s a driving technique where the driver intentionally or unintentionally oversteers, causing loss of traction in the rear wheels or all tires, while maintaining control from entry to exit of a corner. A car is drifting when the rear slip angle is greater than the front slip angle, to such an extent that often the front wheels are pointing in the opposite direction to the turn (e.g. car is turning left, wheels are pointed right or vice versa).
As a motorsport discipline, professional drifting competitions are held worldwide and are judged according to the speed, angle, showmanship and line taken through a corner or set of corners.
I got to experience first hand what it was like to ‘drift’…. and it was INCREDIBLE.
I won’t lie, I was terrified but the excitement and pull of the g-force that goes hand in hand with travelling sideways was an addrenalin rush like I’ve never experienced before.
