The conman posed as her domestic worker's grieving husband and told her she had died overnight. Not only was Agatha devastated by the news, but she was also taken hook, line and sinker. Fortunately a smart Money Market teller asked her if she was sure it wasn't a scam, as she tried to put in another R2000, and so Agatha called her domestic's daughter again -- no-one had previously been answering -- and she said her mom was there and in the best of health.

Another nasty scam was reported by Adriaan who received an email stating he should appear in court - as per info attached. The attachment had been blocked by the firewall, so he deleted the mail. Then last week another similar mail arrived trying to bait him into opening an attachment. Adriaan did a bit of checking on the Internet and discovered that this was a hoax - the attachment, a zip file, is apparently a virus that enables its sender to log your keystrokes and therefore gain access to passwords and the like.

In 'Maritzburg, Morag says there have been a number of remote jamming thefts from cars in the parking lot at the Pick 'n Pay centre in Victoria Road. Morag's car, along with with five others lately according to a guard, was burgled in under 2 minutes. None of the items taken had been visible from outside. It's vital you become aware that remote jamming incidents are increasing and take steps to double check your car is actually locked before you walk away.

Finally, Wendy emailed to say her neighbour's car was broken into in Sarnia's Protea Road on Saturday night. All the tyres were taken. She says it's not the first such incident in her area.
