With less than a week to go before the opening of the third Caf African Nations Championship (Chan), there is still not much hype around the event.

The tournament, which features home-based players only, is set to kick off this weekend and will run until the 1st of February.

As hosts, South Africa qualified automatically for the three-week competition.

Bafana Bafana will be joined from the Southern Zone by Zimbabwe, who booked their place with a win over Zambia, and Mozambique, who defeated Angola.

The other participants will be Libya, Morocco, Mauritania, Mali, Ghana, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Congo, Gabon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Ethiopia and Uganda.

Matches will be played in Cape Town (Cape Town Stadium and Athlone Stadium), Bloemfontein (Free State Stadium) and Polokwane (Peter Mokaba Stadium).

All Bafana matches will be played at Cape Town’s Cape Town Stadium.
South Africa will face Mozambique in the opening match at 18h00 on Saturday.

There have been concerns raised about what some people say is poor marketing of the tournament.

The perception is that the event has been somewhat underpublicised as many South Africans seem to not know about it.

Makhosi Khoza picked football management consultant Glyn Binkin’s brains about the issue.
