Zondo ton puts Dolphins in control
Updated | By CSA
A 10th career century by Khaya Zondo laid the foundation for an excellent opening day for the Hollywoodbets Dolphins against the bizhub Highveld Lions in their round six 4-Day Domestic Series encounter at the Bidvest Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on Wednesday.
The visiting captain was still there at the close after batting his way to an unbeaten 114 (213 balls, 16 fours 3 sixes) as his side closed on 302 for six.
It was a vital innings for the winless Durban-based side, who are looking for a much better second half of the campaign to try to move off the bottom of the table.
And, led by their courageous skipper, there was good support through half-centuries from Cody Chetty (65 off 114 balls, 11 fours) and Standard Bank Proteas all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo (57 off 85 balls, 11 fours, 1 six).
The Dolphins won the toss and batted first on the Highveld, but it looked to be a case of same old story for them when they fell to 25 for two.
Sarel Erwee (3) and Vaughn van Jaarsveld (15) were the men to go early after Beuran Hendricks (1/52) and Dwaine Pretorius (3/37) struck.
However, Chetty and Zondo rebuilt through an 88-run third wicket stand, before another period of wickets falling in clumps followed.
The former, Sibonelo Makhanya (0) and Grant Roelofsen (5) were the three to go next as the Dolphins fell from 113 for two to 128 for five.
But Phehlukwayo helped his captain add 116 for wicket number six as the away side moved back in control.
Even after the loss of the all-rounder, Zondo held fort.
He found another able partner in number one national spinner, Keshav Maharaj (23), sharing an unbroken 54 that took them to the close.
