Zondo century steers Dolphins

A fine unbeaten century from Khaya Zondo ensured the Hollywoodbets Dolphins fought back well to take control of their Sunfoil Series encounter against the BuildNat Cape Cobras after day one at Boland Park in Paarl on Thursday.

Khaya Zondo
Dane Paterson’s four wickets had left the hosts in total control just after lunch, but Zondo hit back with 139 (221 balls, 23 fours) as the visitors recovered from 115/5 to close on 285/5.

It was a remarkable turnaround for the Durbanites, who were in trouble from as early as the third ball when Imraan Khan was dismissed for two after they had lost the toss and were asked to bat first.

Daryn Smit (3) also fell cheaply making it 8/2 inside five overs, before Vaughn van Jaarsveld hit 56 (112 balls, 8 fours) and Divan van Wyk (38), sharing in an 83-run third wicket stand that resurrected the innings.

Paterson (4/46) kept plugging away as the away team lost three wickets for 24 after the lunch break.

Zondo, though, steadied the ship and went on to share in an unbroken 170-run sixth wicket stand with his captain, Morne van Wyk (37).

It was Zondo’s seventh career century and the highest score of his franchise career, which left the Dolphins well in control at stumps.
