World top 20 spot for Grace

With a Majors record for 2015 showing a missed cut, a share a fourth, a share of 20th and third, the golfing world has been served notice that Branden Grace is a serious contender.

Grace finished five strokes back in third at 15-under-par behind the victorious Jason Day in the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin yesterday.

New world number one, Jordan Spieth, claiming that spot with his second-place finish in Wisconsin, three shots off the record-setting 20-under-par carved out by the phenomenal performance by Australian golfer Day.

It was a significant performance by Grace, who climbed to 20th in the Official World Golf Rankings, not least because the next best South African home was his friend George Coetzee, who is just two years older than Grace.

Coetzee carded a final-round 67 to finish in a share of seventh to complete a tournament which has showed conclusively that the next generation of South African golfers – after Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel – is ready to compete at the highest level.

Ernie Els finished in a share of 25th, Oosthuizen tied for 30th, while Schwartzel’s final-round 75 saw him in a share of 37th.
