Woman lands Durban harbour skate

A female angler was given a tough tussle by a brown skate in Durban harbour during the past week.

Large grunter have not been caught as much as they should have been over the closing stages of summer in Durban harbour.

Fortunately, last week saw a large number of good sized grunter caught on cracker off the banks and in the deep.

Kayak anglers did incredibly well over the shallow sand banks on the spring tides and managed to outfish anglers on boats and off the banks.

The element of surprise is key and ultra-light finesse bait presentation has been the reason why so many of these anglers on kayaks have done so well.

The internationally trusted Daiwa Sensor Monofilament is now available in a 6lb option and will be welcomed by many a finesse angler. This light line has an incredible abrasion resistance, good stretch, excellent knot strength and best of all, is very affordable.

On the weekend, Emma Harber managed a fine brown skate of 14kg on a Daiwa Megaforce 7ft Light action rod, loaded with 8lb Daiwa Sensor Monofilament. Emma was using a cracker as bait on a Mustad size 6 Carp hook, targeting grunter when the energetic skate picked up the bait and kept her bent for the next half hour.

Charter boats have had some good luck in the N Shed area, as well as the wharf around the I&J. Most anglers have caught grunter of decent size, however many other species such as flathead, stumpnose, snapper salmon and perch have been caught.

There are also large numbers of pouter on the banks, which can be annoying. Anglers are urged to move to another spot once this shoal moves in.
