Weather stifles another Dolphins Sunfoil Series clash

A strong hail storm on Sunday afternoon and gloomy Monday conditions led the umpires to abandon the Sunfoil Series clash between the Hollywoodbets Dolphins and the bizhub Highveld Lions at the Pietermaritzburg Oval.

The draw is the third of the season for the Dolphins with their last two clashes falling prey to the elements.

With a large portion of the first three days of the four day contest being lost to rain and bad light the chances of a result, should they have played on Monday, would have been unlikely but it would have given the Dolphins a good chance to get time in the middle with the bat.

Despite the hosts being 185/6 at the close of play on the third day they would have been happy with the form of Vaughn van Jaarsveld. The swash-buckling left-hander has registered five half centuries in his five Sunfoil Series innings this season.

Another booster from their batting innings would have been the fact that Sibz Makhanya spent an extended period of time at the wicket. The youngster might have only scored 20 but he faced over 85 deliveries.

With the ball the Dolphins shared the wickets around with left-arm seamer Mthokozisi Shezi claiming two of the Lions' wickets while spinner Senuran Muthusamy also picked up two sticks.

Calvin Savage would have been pleased to have picked up two wickets with the ball, including the wicket of Rassie van der Dussen who was on 75. The all-rounder, who missed out on selection in the first game of the season, will be happy to have contributed to the side in the curtailed match.

The Hollywoodbets Dolphins will welcome back Sarel Erwee for this week's Sunfoil Series clash with the Multiply Titans at the Pietermaritzburg Oval starting on Monday, 16 October.
