We chat to Tim Whitehead
Updated | By Andre Bloem
Sportswave caught up with Sharks centre Tim Whitehead this week and found out about his rituals before a big game, why he's a Will Farrell fan, his advice for young rugby players - and that he's "single and ready to mingle".
Do you follow certain rituals in the 24 hours before a game?
Nothing in particular. I try to be as relaxed as I can. I only start thinking about the game two hours before the kickoff. I always ensure that I have a big lunch the day before a match. I always put my left boot on first and I have no idea why.
What is your favourite movie and why?
It depends on what type of mood I am in. I like old-school movies though. If I am in the mood for laughter then a Will Farrell movie always goes down well. When I am in a serious mood, a movie like Gladiator is something I enjoy, as I am a big fan of commanders of the armies of the north.
Is there any song you are enjoying at the moment?
Any song by Munford & Sons is cool.
Tell us a bit more about your personal life – are you married with kids?
I am not married. I am single and ready to mingle, but at the same time I am very relaxed. I like time to myself as well.

Where did you matriculate and did the school play a big role in making you the person you are today?
I matriculated in 2006 from Grey High in P.E. School is definitely vital in moulding the person you become later on in life. Despite what my fellow teammates from Grey College Bloemfontein think, I still believe that both the Greys are equal in what they have to offer.
Do you have a favourite rugby stadium?
Playing in front of my home crowd at Growthpoint KINGS PARK is always special. I also enjoy playing at Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein, as the air is thin there and it is always a nice venue to throw the ball around, therefore ensuring an open game.
Are you the outdoors type or does relaxing mean Playstation or a trip to the movies perhaps?
Definitely an outdoors type of person. I like to be out and about. On my day off I play golf, hang out with mates or grab a cup of coffee.
Is there any advice you would like to share with youngsters keen on a career in professional rugby?
Don’t put all your eggs in one basket; meaning never rely on one specific thing. Set your goals and back yourself to achieve them. It’s all about a balance in life.
Apart from rugby, which sports do you enjoy playing and watching?
I love watching and playing golf.I also watch a bit of English Premiership soccer and athletics.
