WATCH - Cobia fishing on the double
The cobia is a fish known both for its fighting ability and its taste. The meat is said to be excellent and yet I have not eaten cobia to date. These fish are also known as prodigal son here in South Africa.
The biggest known cobia caught with a rod and reel weighed 60kg and was landed in Australia.
Cobia are known to follow sharks, rays and turtles in order to scavenge.
I recall a 34kg cobia shot by a spear-fisherman off the Bluff in Durban several years back.
I have also seen cobia caught off North Pier in Durban.
Cobia are also caught deep sea off boats and skis.
