East Coast Radio Sportswave anchor and reporter, Alain Tardin, got a taste of Durban surfski action earlier today.

So this morning I got the chance to head down to Addington Beach for the Varsity College Marine Surfski Series Media Challenge.

After receiving two awesome GoPro Hero 3s from the team in Cape Town I was eager to test them out.

The weather was awesome and I was edging to get out on the water.

Being my first time on a surfski in the ocean I thought I'd be spending more time in the water than paddling.

Luckily my recent kayak fishing trips put me in a good standing and I was up and out in no time - Maybe because we each got our own pro paddler to help with the challenge...

The prizes up for grabs were for biggest wave and biggest wipe out. Being somewhat of an adrenaline junkie I was aiming for both!

The paddle out through the waves was awesome and the skis punch through the waves nicely - though I did get knocked off a few times.

We sat out the back waiting for the set and managed to catch a great wave in - without bailing - to make it safely back to shore. I was hooked and spent the next hour paddling in and out catching wave after wave.

At the end of the day I managed to do the Sportswave team proud and claim the biggest wave prize.

I have got to say that surfski paddling must be one of the best ways to get some good fitness training in before work in the mornings. Nothing better than being out on the water having fun and getting fit at the same time.

I look forward to heading back on Friday to take part in the first leg of the series with my teammate, Brett Challenor, from Stealth Kayaks.
